If there is one thing every high school athlete needs to be prepared for when they head off to college, it is how to manage their time. I have provided some tips for how to better manage your time and what mistakes to avoid.
Tip #1 - Segment your day by categories and name them providing purpose for each. Our athletes’ day is broken into different segments, here is the breakdown. 60 minutes in an hour, 24 hours in a day, 7 days a week...everyone has this! Absolutes throughout the day Class Meetings Practice Film Food Study Time Personal Time Tip #2 - Avoid the “TIME KILLERS” “Time Killers” will try to invade your day don’t let them in. Video games, Social media, Television, etc. are examples of these “time killers” Example of how “Time Killers” can steal a precious hour of your day. 9am class and 11am class. You will have roughly 1 hour between the end of your 9am and the start of your 11 am class. This is a great time to complete some homework, re-write your notes from the 9am class. However, many students opt to engage in social media, video games and now that hour is lost and will need to be made up later. Tip #3 - Look to the leaders in your program for what a typical day should look like and then schedule it out. Typical Day: 8am- Wake Up, Shower and Eat breakfast 9am- Class 10 am- Re-write notes from 9am and final prep for 11am class 11 am- Class 12 pm- Eat lunch with friends 1:00pm- Class 2:00- ****Big hour...study, re-write notes, get a head start on homework 3:00- 7:00 - Great time to work out, run, lift, wall ball, eat dinner, shower, etc During the season, practice might be from 4-6 Guys will head to the locker room around 3 and then leave a little after 6 to go eat. 7-10pm- Homework 10-11pm- Maybe time to be on social media, video games...set a limit 11pm- Get to bed 9 hours of sleep... *Nutrition and great sleep are super important* The fact of the matter is that in college a students has more free time then he or she is used to. The students who are heading off to college have been programmed by their school system and parents to have a set daily schedule. College life works on a different schedule and if a student is not prepared for that change, in can really have a negative effect on their growth on the field and off the field. The key is asking yourself, “What am I going to do with my free time?” My advice is to never treat it as free time and give that time a purpose. Purposeful athletes make for better athletes and purposeful students make for better students. So give your “free time” a purpose! Have a great spring season and lead your team!
